Chandigarh In view of the gradual expansion in the campus area, Panjab University has planned to set up another central library and a student centre on the south campus, Sector 25, this year. With the number of student enrolments going up every year due to introduction of new courses and increase in number of seats in existing courses, the students have been complaining about shortage in the study area inside the AC Joshi library.
In the past, various students’ organisations in the university have submitted to the Vice-Chancellor their demands for extension of the reading area by addition of new halls in the existing central library.
Citing the management’s limitations in altering the existing set-up of the A C Joshi library, V-C R C Sobti said, “We understand the needs of the students. They need more space for studying. But due to heritage-related issues, we cannot make changes in the existing design of the library.”
“However, we have come up with a plan to set up another library on the new campus. Also, we will provide another student centre on the south campus,” said Sobti during the budget session at the Senate meeting on Saturday.
The authorities have set aside a budget of Rs 50 lakh for the purpose, he added.
Addressing the demands of the senators, the V-C also assured that steps would be taken to improve residential facilities and cleanliness on the south campus. The university had recently sanctioned nearly 80 posts of security guards to enhance surveillance inside the campus.

With the establishment of a new library, which is expected to keep the reading halls open for 24 hours, like in the AC Joshi library, the university will have to depute more security guards around the library area.
