COURSERA An online portal: Log on to long-distance Lectures

Log on to long-distance lectures COURSERA An online portal helps students access online classroom lectures posted by renowned professors

MUMBAI: Every morning, Vishal Khatri, 20, a fourth year civil engineering student at the Indian Institute of TechnologyBombay (IIT-B) attends lectures there. Every evening, Khatri attends lectures at the University of Stanford, several time zones and thousands of kilometres away.

Khatri is among thousands of students and working professionals from around the world accessing classroom lectures posted by renowned professors through an online portal Coursera. This week, 12 more universities announced they would join Coursera and make their lectures available. Details from the site show that Indians rank second in terms of enrolments after the US.

Khatri completed a course in cryptography in April and i s now rifling through the other options. “Without this, I wouldn’t have had t he chance to learn from so many experienced people. It is totally worth it.”

Courses available through Coursera are around 10 weeks long and are free. Students can also earn a credit for assignments either from Coursera or a respective university.

With major universities signing up to make learning material available online for f ree, an official Mumbai Courserians group listed on the website already has 29 members.

“I wanted to learn statistics and data analysis with a view to changing my profession; this seemed good,” said Brijesh Bolar, 32, who has signed up for five different courses available from five different US universities, four of which begin in September.

Institutes in Mumbai have al so been offering online learning modules to students through pre-recorded open access lectures and live sessions. The e-learning centre at Mumbai University’s department of life-long learning, that hosts online video lectures in three subjects since 2007, is now working on making special lectures and seminars held at the Kalina campus available by recording these in a studio.

“This helps working people get access, and also allows people to learn at their own convenience,” said Mohan Kumar, assistant professor in charge of the e-learning centre.

At IIT- B, the Ask A Question programme allows students from across the country to log in and ask an IIT-B professor a question during a one-hour slot every Thursday. IIT-B has video recordings of lecture training programmes for engineering teachers available for download.

“Coursera can benefit a large number of people,” said Deepak Phatak, professor of computer science at IIT B.

Library@BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus

Inaugurated on the 16th of December the 55,000 square feet library had his Excellency E.S.L. Narasimhan the Governor of Andhra Pradesh to cut the ribbon. Ceremoniously done at an auspicious hour of 4:40 the building was graced by the presence of the director of Bits Hyderabad Prof. V. S. Rao and other professors. The library, consisting of two floors, has natural ventilation and is Wi-Fi enabled. It has about 30,000 books and subscribes to a number of academic, scientific and research journals, number of e-books and e-journals as well. It also has a digital library with a good collection of e-books and e-journals as well. It also has photo copying facilities, apart from a large area for reference books.

This library is a green library that doesn't consume much energy as there is ample light. There is no need to switch on lights during day time. The library has thousands of books in electronic format and more are being added constantly. Access to this material is restricted to the students and faculty at the campus. Reserve a book in advance is one of the many additional facilities that can be availed here. New arrival display helps reserve books in circulation. The library is fully computerized and the catalogue of resources and books can now be accessed online from the hostel as well.

The library is the haven for every student during the exam time. The library if filled with students who absorbed in the astounding silence and the studious ambience created by the presence of books and the perfect amount of light maintaining the sanctity. Students enjoy this aura that the library provides them with. Also the air conditioning cooling up the summer's heat and making the temperature very study friendly. Even the not so studious students choose to come over to the library when the exams approach.

The strategic placement of the library, pretty close to the canteen also enables students to refresh themselves and get recharged. The comprehensive exam time is when the library remains open longer than the usual 11 P.M till about 1 A.M making it convenient for the students who can fruitfully utilize the extra hours in going through the previous papers or reference books. The fiction collection though a little thin fascinates me and happens to be one of my personal favourites'. The Grandh initiative by a few students supposed to collect more number of books in several categories can be used to increase the collection of the library. The magnanimous structure in all not only enlightens bright minds of the rocky nation called Bits Hyderabad but also is an architectural marvel and serves as a grand attraction to our campus.

Now rent books from online library Hookedonbook.com; Can books work where DVD rentals failed?

Even as online rentals for products is yet to be validated as a sustainable business model at least in India (remember what happened to DVD rentals?), there are new startups trying their hand at it, albeit with a different proposition. One such firm is a Delhi-based startup, which has just launched an online library Hookedonbook.com with a paid subscription model, while also hedging the business with an online store for second hand books.

The site claims to have more than 10,000 books as of now and offers free delivery and pick-up for all its books. The site went live just last week, and as of now the service is only available in the Delhi-NCR region.
Hookedonbook Pvt Ltd was founded by Vikram Khosla in April 2012. Prior to Hookedonbook, Khosla was running an import-export business in the US, before shifting base back to India. He holds a B.E degree in Computer Sciences from Karnataka University and has designed the site himself. The company handles its own logistics and has a team size of 12 people, including delivery boys.
For renting the books, users have to first sign up for a monthly membership. As of now, there are three types of memberships available that include ‘individual plan’, ‘buddies plan’ and ‘family plan’ for Rs 500, Rs 750 and Rs 1,000, respectively. The members also have to pay a security deposit equivalent to twice the amount of the membership they have opted for (basically two months membership). So if you opt for the Rs 500 plan, the security deposit will be Rs 1,000, and so on. The individual plan allows its members to rent up to four books in a month, while for buddies plan it is eight per month and for family plan the number goes up to 60 books per month (two books a day).
As of now, the only available payment method is cash on delivery (COD), but the company will gradually enable online payments as well.
“The idea for Hookedonbook actually came from my daughter, who could not find good libraries (both online and offline) to rent books here, after returning from the US,” said Khosla.
Once a member, readers can select a list of books they want to read and the company delivers them one by one at their doorsteps. If by chance, the number one book in the readers list is not available, the company delivers the number two book in the list, while promising to make the number one book available to the reader in a fortnight.
The maximum delivery time for a book is 48 hours and readers can keep them for as long as their membership lasts. Some of the new titles we found on the site included Calico Joe (John Grisham), Fifty Shades of Grey (E. L. James), What Young India Wants (Chetan Bhagat) and In Different Form (Yuvraj Singh).

Librarian, top official dupe BJMC(Pune) of Rs 4 cr

Vigilance branch of the Dept of Medical Education and Research unearths misappropriation in the purchase of books and medical journals since 1999

By -Tanaji Khot
A major scam in the purchase of books and medical journals at the prestigious B J Medical College’s (BJMC’s) central library has been exposed following a recent inspection by the vigilance branch of the Department of Medical Education and Research which has uncovered misappropriation of over Rs 4 crore.

The vigilance branch investigation has revealed that the library administration flouted every norm set by the Good Office Committee (GOC), New Delhi while making these purchases.
The purchase of books and journals was not done as per the norms set by the GOC

The inspection report came to the conclusion that the purchase of the medical journals was not done in accordance with the rules but on the basis of a “mutual understanding” arrived between librarian R K Jadhav and CEO T M Lakade, the publisher and the supplier.

The audit report has also indicted the supplier, Doctors Library (India), for cheating the government and the educational loss caused to the student of the medical college and recommended legal action against them.

According to GOC norms, a supplier has to furnish the order given to any international publisher and also proof of money transfer to the latter like bank remittance, customer ID and subscription number.

In BJMC’s case, Doctors Library has not furnished this proofs since 1999. The audit report recommends blacklisting of Doctors Library (India) and recovery of Rs 34, 71,562, which was supposed to be paid to Globe Publication immediately.

If they fail to reimburse the same, according to the auditors. the entire amount of over Rs 4 crore should be recovered from Doctors Library.

The report also holds librarian R K Jadhav responsible for failing to recover all documents from the supplier on time. His act suggests deliberate negligence, the report claims, as he did not verify whether all journals were delivered on the stipulated time or not and the cost of the journals was accurate.

Even though the supplier's was not up to the standard, Jadhav mentioned It as satisfactory and repeatedly recommended the renewal of his annual contract.  This established that Jadhav protected the supplier's interest resulting in a huge loss to the government.

T M Lakade, BJMC's chief administrative officer, was also held guilty for the releasing the payments of these purchases and violating several financial guidelines. He too is reported to have secured the supplier's interest and duped the state.

The report has expressed fears that an attempt to destroy the records or them going missing cannot be ruled out as Lakde was at the helm in 1999 when this misappropriation and corruption took place.

District library found them jobs and friends

K Narasimhamurthy, Kolar, July 28, 2012, DHNS:

Common ground
They all come from villages and belong to agricultural families. These youth appeared for various competitive examinations and have been successful.

Preparing for competitive examinations is no easy task. One needs to do a lot of reading and this requires the purchase of expensive books. These youth were in no position to afford expensive books. Yet they were successful in appearing for the examination and emerging successful.

There is no great secret behind their success. In addition to their hard work, the backbone for their studies was the District Central Library. They did not learn how to use the library from anyone, but they made the best use of it.

Venkatapara Srinivas Reddy of Bethmangala hobli of Bangarpet taluk, who has been selected as statistical officer; Malappanahalli Malathi of Devarayasamudra Gram Panchayat in Mulbagal taluk  has been selected as principal of Morarji Desai School; Arathi of Yanadahalli of Kolar taluk is the superintendent of Backward Class Minorities Hostel; B S Vijayalakshmi of Byalahalli is the statistical officer. This list goes on.

They were all strangers in the beginning, but became friends at the central library. They all had one ambition - to get a job. It is not easy to appear for competitive examinations and face the challenge from urban candidates. Regular studies, constant reference to resource books and guides. Study materials and coaching classes are expensive.

Therefore they all depended upon the  Central library. They went through every available books and guides on competitive examinations available in the library. Requests for particular books made to the library authorities got quick response and books were made available as early as possible.

These aspirants used to come to the library at 10 am and stayed back till 6 pm. They brought lunch from home. Having broken the ice, they became friends and during the lunch hours held group discussion.

“We were not used to visiting libraries and making use of it. After coming here we became familiar with books. We discussed what we read,” says Ramesh.

Says Srinivas Reddy, “In our group of seven members, five secured jobs in one go. One of our members is studying for his Karnataka Administrative Service examination.” They are unanimous in their opinion that all this happened because of the library.
