MM Kumar, a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and also the inspecting judge for Gurgaon, inaugurated the library and IGNOU centre on the jail premises on Thursday.
After launching the library, justice Kumar said, “Those who are literate will be able to read books by
getting them issued in their names and would also read them out to other inmates.”
The IGNOU centre has five classrooms, including a computer room and a music room. According to the jail superintendent, an inmate who is a chartered accountant and is proficient in computers, would impart basic knowledge of computers to other prisoners.
A group of inmates also sang a song for the inspecting judge in the music room. “Music relieves tension and helps in maintaining mental balance,” Kumar said.
A representative of Canara Bank met the judge to discuss starting vocational courses for inmates under the Rudset Institute. Training in horticulture, embroidery, computer and TV repairing would be imparted to the prisoners under the programme.
Bhondsi Jail presently has more than 1,700 inmates, out of whom 42 are women.
